GUEST SPEAKER

Dr. Rosalba Courtney is an Osteopath, Naturopath and specialist in breathing therapy who has been in practice for over 30 years. In 1992 she was one of the first people outside of Russia to be trained in the Buteyko Method, studying in Australia and also in Russia and later training practitioners in Australia, the UK and the USA. Since that time she has investigated many types of breathing therapies and she has currently completed a PhD through RMIT University on the topic of "Dysfunctional Breathing; its Parameters, Measurement and Relationship to Clinical Practice". She has published 10 journal articles in peer reviewed journals on her PhD research. Rosalba currently practices in Sydney where she combines Osteopathic treatment and other complementary therapies with different types of Breathing Therapy including the Buteyko Method.
SEMINAR PROGRAMME
Exploring the nature and effects of breathing dysfunction in children
There are many several types of breathing dysfunction in children. These include mouth breathing, breathing patterns disorders and hyperventilation. The most easily recognised breathing dysfunction in children is mouth breathing. Mouth breathing has many negative effects on the stomatognathic system, the health of the airways, sleep quality and on general growth and development. However, mouth breathing is usually accompanied by a range of breathing pattern disorders. These compound and re-enforce the negative effects of mouth breathing and produce their own set of negative consequences on the function of the autonomic nervous system, the cranial mechanism, the spine, the lymphatic system and the digestive system.
Understand, recognise and assess various types of breathing dysfunction
In this workshop you will learn to recognise and assess the most common types of breathing dysfunctions that occur in children. Assessment procedures include observational, manual assessment and symptom pattern recognition. Several of these breathing assessment procedures were developed and validated by Dr. Courtney as part of her PhD research.
Correct breathing dysfunction by using child appropriate techniques and addressing causes and contributing factors
Sometimes breathing dysfunctions, particularly those that are mostly habit, can be corrected with breathing retraining using techniques such as the Buteyko method or other remedial breathing protocols. However at other times it is necessary to go deeper and broader by addressing causes and contributing factors to achieve the best long lasting results.
Common causes and contributors to breathing dysfunction that we will explore include:
- Nutritional,
- Structural
- Psychophysiological
Child appropriate techniques for breathing training:
- Buteyko set to music and stories
- Remedial breathing exercises for children that complement the Buteyko Method
- Specific approaches that target individual breathing pattern dysfunctions.
